Extraction of Reflections from Tube Waves

چکیده

Meng (1997) used the McConnell crosswell data to show that transmitted arrival traveltimes can be extracted from common receiver gathers (CRG) where the effective source is a tube wave generator. In this report I use the McElroy crosswell data to show that reflection events can be extracted from CRG’s where the effective source is a tube wave generator. This result opens the possibility that more economical crosswell seismic survey might be possible using surface seismic sources and tube wave generators in the source well. The remaining question is whether or not the tube wave generator is strong enough to generate high signal to noise ratio reflections. INTRODUCTION Meng (1997) proposed the possibility that a crosswell survey can be performed by only using a surface seismic source and tube wave generators (i.e., obstructions) in the source well. As an example, the tube wave response in the source well was computed for Noranda’s McConnell crosshole data and the corresponding transmitted direct waves were clearly imaged. However, the reflection waves were too weak for that particular tube wave secondary source as well as for the conventional seismic source. This leaves open a question: Is the tube wave generator strong enough to generate reflection signals which are needed for crosswell migration? In this report I process the McElroy crosswell data to answer this question. Results show that the tube wave responses extracted from the McElroy crosswell data contain useful direct and reflected P and S waves which can be used for crosswell imaging. EXTRACTING TUBE WAVE RESPONSE FROM CONVENTIONAL CROSSWELL DATA The processing needed for extracting the tube wave responses is as follows: 1. Supposing there exists an impedance discontinuity at depth Z0 in the source well, the tube wave will be generated at this obstruction using a conventional downhole source

Solving the Governing Equations of Sea Waves Nonlinearly and Designing A CETO Mechanism for Energy Extraction from the Waves of Larak and Faror Islands

In this paper, the governing equations of sea waves are analyzed nonlinearly and the energy extraction from the waves in the Lark and Faror islands in the Persian Gulf is determined. According to the data in the last 31 years, the waves of these two islands have the most incidence for the height of 0-0.4 m and 0.4-0.8 m corresponding for the time periodicity of 2.4-3 s and 3-3.6 s, respectively...

Calculation of Conical (mach) Wave Displacement Fields Radiated by Borehole Sources in Slow Formations and Inhomogeneous Media

Stationary phase solutions for the radiation patterns of borehole sources are commonly used to study the far-field seismic wavefields produced in crosshole or reverse VSP experiments, but they break down when the formation shear wave velocity is less than the tube wave velocity in the source borehole. This is because the tube wave, not the primary source, radiates the dominant shear wave signal...

Shock focusing in a planar convergent geometry: experiment and simulation

The behaviour of an initially planar shock wave propagating into a linearly convergent wedge is investigated experimentally and numerically. In the experiment, a 25◦ internal wedge is mounted asymmetrically in a pressure-driven shock tube. Shock waves with incident Mach numbers in the ranges of 1.4–1.6 and 2.4–2.6 are generated in nitrogen and carbon dioxide. During each run, the full pressure ...

Defect detection for aircraft components: An approach using ultrasonic guided waves and neural networks

Ultrasonic Guided Wave (UGW) techniques have become significant tools for the application of Non-Destructive Testing (NDT). Their ability to propagate within a structure for large distances is a key feature. In the case of structures with relatively simple geometries, such as pipes, the inspector's analysis of received reflections of the excited waves can highlight defective areas of the struct...

Effect of Magnetic Field on Torsional Waves in Non-Homogeneous Aeolotropic Tube

The effect of magnetic field on torsional waves propagating in non-homogeneous viscoelastic cylindrically aeolotropic material is discussed. The elastic constants and non-homogeneity in viscoelastic medium in terms of density and elastic constant is taken. The frequency equations have been derived in the form of a determinant involving Bessel functions. Dispersion equation in each case has been...
